“So good you’ll want to eat it at home”
“You’ll be so hungry you’ll eat anything”

Trail food is light weight, healthy, filling, nutritious, and easy to prepare.

Your guide will help prepare a menu from:

  • Fresh food (oranges, cucumber, eggs, …)

  • Grocery items (pitas, cheese, pudding, …)

  • Dehydrated meals (chili, Pad Thai, …)

  • Dehydrated food (veggies, soups, …)

  • Freeze dried foods (fruits, veggies, …)

  • Snacks (GORP, granola bars, cookies, …)

  • Beverages (coffee, tea, lemonade, …)

Cooking over the fire

The wonderful smell of fresh pine, cedar, and birch and the crackling sound of a campfire is a wonderful way to prepare a meal. Set the pots and a fry pan over the fire grate and dinner turns out just right!

Cooking over the stove

Get heat fast and fry up your meal. Or boil water in record time for a hot drink or to re-hydrate food. Cooking over a stove is clean, efficient, and essential in big rains or when you are ready to eat right away.

Doing the dishes is way more fun on trail!

The clean plate club and working together as a team to have no left-overs are part of our life on trail. Why? They make dishes easier and keep the Boundary Waters cleaner!

The Leave No Trace philosophy in the Boundary Waters protects the land and the water, keeping it clean and pristine for generations to come. With that, we pack out all garbage and do our dishes back in the woods with hot soapy water.

Drinking Water

The lakes in the Boundary Waters provide some of the cleanest water in the world! Campers used to dip their cups right into the lakes to enjoy fresh, crisp, pure drinking water.

Though still possible in many areas, human activity has caused an increase in microbes in the water that can make us sick. So we treat all drinking and cooking water.

The Platypus GravityWorks filter is pictured for in-camp use. While canoeing we use the MSR Guardian Purifier to re-fill our water bottles during the day. We can boil water anytime for a solid minute to kill any viruses, bacteria, and parasites.

Come enjoy some of the freshest water in the world!

Keeping it real…

A struggle: We have a healthy and hearty menu full of veggies, fruits, protein, fiber, and whole wheat carbs. We also have abundant fresh water. Staying regular and hydrated are the goals. Drink that water and eat your beans!

A temptation: Some may want to sneak in snacks (this lures in bears). Some may not drink enough water (this increases risk of injury and illness). Resist the temptation to do either. You’ll be well fed and we’ll monitor hydration.

A hope: My mouth is watering thinking about campfire pizzas, chicken and feta pitas, and how good a bean burrito tastes after portaging and paddling all morning. Eating is part of the joy of being on trail, and we’ll eat well.
